The Performance of Polycrystalline Diamond (PCD) Tools Machined by Abrasive Grinding and Electrical Discharge Grinding (EDG) in High-Speed Turning

Polycrystalline diamond (PCD) tools are widely used in industry due to their outstanding physical properties. However, the ultra-high hardness of PCD significantly limits machining efficiency conventional abrasive grinding processes, which utilized manufacture tools. In contrast, electrical discharge (EDG) has higher because its unique material removal mechanism. this study, quality and performance machined by EDG were investigated. The cutting consisted different materials was tested high-speed turning titanium alloy Ti6Al4V. Flank wear crater investigated analyzing worn profile, micro morphology, chemical decomposition, forces. results showed that an adhesive-abrasive process dominated processes flank wear. Tool loss caused development thermal cracks. tools’ made small-sized grains a steady adhesion-abrasion without any catastrophic damage. large-scale fracture happened large-sized grains. Adhesive more severe on EDG.
